Superworms (Zophobas morio)

Superworms are a dependable, high-energy feeder insect suitable for a wide range of reptiles. Their active movement and durability make them an excellent choice for encouraging feeding responses in species such as bearded dragons, skinks, monitors, and other medium to large insectivores.

Nutrition
Superworms provide a strong source of protein and fat, making them ideal for supporting growth and maintaining body condition. Typical nutritional values include:

• Protein: approximately 19–22%
• Fat: approximately 14–18%
• Moisture: approximately 60%

Due to their higher fat content, superworms are best incorporated as part of a varied feeding program rather than used as a primary staple.

Feeding Recommendations
Offer superworms in sizes appropriate to your animal—generally no larger than the distance between the eyes.

• Use as a supplement alongside staple feeders such as crickets or roaches
• Dust with calcium and vitamin supplements as needed
• Feed in a dish or with tongs to reduce the risk of substrate ingestion
• Not recommended for very small or young reptiles

Care and Storage
Superworms are easy to keep and require minimal maintenance when properly housed:

• Store at room temperature (20–23°C); refrigeration is not recommended
• Keep in a ventilated container with a dry bedding such as bran or oats
• Provide moisture using fresh vegetables like carrot or potato
• Maintain cleanliness by removing waste and uneaten food regularly

Species Information
Zophobas morio is the larval stage of a tropical darkling beetle. Unlike mealworms, superworms should be kept warm and active to maintain their health and longevity.
